SAFER – Service and Applications For Emergency Response

In the forthcoming years (2009-2011) the GMES Emergency Response Service will be “powered” by two EC funded complementary Projects: SAFER.

SAFER, a Research & Development Project, is in charge of developing user friendly space- based geo-information products in order to strengthen European information capacities to
respond to emergency situations: fires, floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, humanitarian crisis, etc. It is responsible for building the production lines and delivery mechanism of the Emergency Response satellite information service, consolidating the GMES Emergency Response Service mapping and analysis Service Portfolio and scaling up a European Service network. A wide set of consolidated thematic products covering both the Civil Protection and the Humanitarian Aid domains will be delivered during “normal” and rapid response conditions, while new thematic domains will be addressed and innovative solutions developed over time.

  • The SAFER project objective is to implement and to validate a pre-operational version of the GMES Emergency Response Service, reinforcing the European capacity to respond to emergency situations
  • As a first priority, SAFER will validate an information service focusing on rapid mapping during the response phase and then enrich this service with a wider set of thematic products
